Ulajh Movie Review: An Intriguing Premise Lost in a Convoluted Plot

Ulajh, directed by Sudhanshu Saria and featuring Janhvi Kapoor, Gulshan Devaiah, and Roshan Mathew, has recently hit theatres. With a premise that promises intrigue and suspense, the film aims to deliver a gripping thriller-drama. However, despite its compelling setting and strong performances, Ulajh struggles with a convoluted plot and predictable storytelling.

Plot Overview

The film centers on Suhana Bhatia (Janhvi Kapoor), an Indian Foreign Services Officer who, despite facing skepticism from her colleagues due to her privileged background, is appointed as the Deputy High Commissioner in London. Her professional life takes a turn when she becomes romantically involved with Nakul (Gulshan Devaiah), a Michelin Star chef. As their relationship progresses, Suhana finds her personal and professional lives inextricably intertwined in a complex situation that could threaten national security.

What Works

Ulajh excels in its setting, which provides ample opportunity for creating tension and drama. The film's depiction of Suhana's struggle against the backdrop of international diplomacy is compelling, and there are moments where her vulnerability is palpable. Gulshan Devaiah delivers a standout performance, portraying the antagonist with a chilling intensity that evokes strong reactions. The technical aspects of the film, including the camera work and color grading, are commendable, and the song "Shaukan" adds a melodic touch to the narrative.

What Doesn’t Work

Despite its strong elements, Ulajh falters due to its convoluted plot and predictable screenplay. The story suffers from numerous loopholes and a lack of engagement, making it difficult for the audience to stay invested. The film's use of the Indo-Pak angle feels overdone and cliché, contributing to a sense of redundancy. Additionally, some aspects of the dialogue, such as a foreign embassy staff member’s insistence on speaking Hindi, come off as awkward and unnecessary.

Performances

Janhvi Kapoor delivers a sincere performance as Suhana Bhatia, showcasing her on-screen presence and emotional depth. However, the character's breakdown scenes require more depth, which she doesn’t fully capture. Gulshan Devaiah's portrayal of Nakul is both terrifying and brilliant, while Roshan Mathew’s role adds an interesting dynamic to the film. Supporting actors Meiyang Chang, Adil Hussain, and Rajesh Tailang also contribute effectively within their roles.

Final Verdict

Ulajh presents an intriguing premise with its focus on high-stakes diplomacy and personal turmoil. However, its execution is marred by a convoluted plot and predictable narrative. The film’s strengths lie in its setting, performances, and technical aspects, but it ultimately falls short of being a truly engaging thriller.

For those interested in a film that attempts to blend political drama with personal stakes, Ulajh is worth a watch. But for viewers seeking a tightly woven thriller, this film might not fully satisfy.
