Jesse Williams' Tobert Will Not Return

Jesse Williams' Tobert Will Not Return for 'Only Murders in the Building' Season 4

Fans of Only Murders in the Building were taken aback by Jesse Williams' recent announcement that his character, Tobert, will not be returning for the show's fourth season. Despite the dramatic and open-ended finale of Season 3, Williams confirmed his departure while speaking to PEOPLE at the premiere of his new docuseries Distilled on July 28, 2024. "No, I'm not on that show anymore," he stated clearly.

Introduced in Season 3, Tobert, a cameraman played by Williams, became central to the investigation led by Mabel (Selena Gomez) into a fictional play by Ben Glenroy (Paul Rudd). His departure marked a significant shift, as Tobert had developed a close bond with Mabel before moving to LA to pursue an indie film career.

Season 4 will continue without Tobert, but it promises to bring fresh dynamics. Gomez will return alongside Steve Martin (Charles-Haden Savage) and Martin Short (Oliver Putnam). Meryl Streep and Paul Rudd are also set to reprise their roles. New additions to the cast include Eva Longoria, Eugene Levy, Zach Galifianakis, Melissa McCarthy, and Molly Shannon.

The upcoming season will also adapt the popular Only Murders podcast into a movie, adding another layer of excitement to the show's evolution. Although John Hoffman had hoped for Williams’ return, the actor reflects positively on his experience working with comedy legends Martin and Short, calling it a "pinch yourself moment" and praising Gomez as "really delightful."

As fans prepare for the new season, which premieres on August 27, they can catch up on the first three seasons streaming on Hulu. The departure of Tobert might signal new twists and turns in the investigation, keeping the mystery alive and well in the beloved series.
